Sweep the nation - O que significa essa expressão?

Hi there,

Sempre que um produto é lançado, seus idealizadores esperam que ele se torne bastante popular.

Quando algo torna-se público, é lançado, publicado ou seja fica disponível para as pessoas comprarem ou verem, em inglês usamos o phrasal verb come out para expressar isso. Como aqui por exemplo:

The band's new CD is coming out in October.
The author's new book just came out.

Depois de lançado se o sucesso vier e o que quer que seja, tornar-se popular, podemos usar uma expressão em inglês, um idiom para falar isso. "Sweep the nation"  ou "varrer a nação", seria a tradução literal. Então se algo, uma ideia, um sentimento, uma atividade "varre a nação", significa que se torna muito popular, comum em todo o lugar.

"A new type of broom came out. It is sweeping the nation." [Um novo tipo de vassoura foi lançado. Está varrendo a nação/ tornando-se bastante popular.]

Logicamente o trocadilho brinca com a palavra broom (vassoura) para imaginarmos esse novo tipo de vassoura varrendo toda a nação.

Well, that's all for today,
Hope you like it!

  1. Hello Ira, I heard this word a long time ago. Nice topic.
After reading your post I immediately remembered the word "all the rage" as you already posted here, which is something that is very popular; something that everyone wants to do or have.
    Bye!
